A Clearer View – Sight Loss Shropshire Gets a Website with Vision

The charity needed a new website that was accessible to not only the people they support, but their family and friends as well as potential funders. They had spoke to a number of other providers - but they were not ticking the accessibility box.

Sight Loss Shropshire

What they do:

Sight Loss Shropshire has been a guiding light for visually impaired people since 1922. This dedicated charity supports individuals across the region with resources, emotional support, and a listening ear—wherever they are in their journey with sight loss.

How Sight Loss Shropshire’s New Website Is Helping People Navigate Their Sight Loss Journey

Their previous website had seen better days. It was tricky to update, overwhelming to navigate, and didn’t do justice to the incredible work being done behind the scenes.

The goals were clear:

  • Shine a brighter light on events, training, and support
  • Reduce the admin time and tech headaches for staff and volunteers
  • Impress funders and stakeholders with a polished online presence
  • Make the site easier to use — especially for those with visual impairments

Designing with Empathy

We set out to create something as supportive as the charity itself. The brief? A modern, clear, and user-friendly website with:

  • Strong call-to-actions
  • Templates to make updates easier
  • A bold, clean visual design that embraced black backgrounds with white text
  • A home for blogs, events, and supporter logos

Tested by Those Who Matter Most

Designing for accessibility meant testing in the real world. We hit the road to Shrewsbury, running live feedback sessions with visually impaired users and volunteers.

We sat down with:

  • Screen reader users
  • Mobile users with limited sight
  • Long-time supporters who knew what needed improving

As feedback came in, we made edits on the spot, letting users re-test and tell us what worked best. It was a game-changing way to put users in the driving seat.

Built for Now – and the Road Ahead

The new website now includes:

  • A refreshed, professional WordPress build
  • Recurring events functionality to reduce repetition
  • A simplified resource hub for easy updates
  • Templates and smart layouts that future-proof the site
  • Training and support for the team to keep things running smoothly

We also gave practical advice on fundraising ideas, drawing on real-world examples from local charities who are doing it well.
